Frankie Hupy

Deputy Public Defender, they/them

Frankie is originally from outside of Boston, and received their Bachelor's Degree in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from Brandeis University, where they graduated cum laude with minors in Theatre Studies, Legal Studies, and Peace Studies.  They continued on to Albany Law School and graduated with concentration honors in Criminal Law.

Life circumstances then brought them out to Oregon, where they hung a shingle for about four and a half years doing a mix of family law, criminal defense, and juvenile law, before joining the Umpqua Valley Public Defender in Roseburg, practicing criminal law and working in treatment courts for six years.  After a two-year hiatus working for the Oregon Judicial Department in Polk County, Frankie is happy and excited to be back fighting the good fight, representing people facing both criminal charges and civil commitment.  They are also the Certified Law Student Lead in charge of education and training, making sure the next generation of public defenders are prepared to be trauma-informed, zealous advocates with a solid work-life balance.

You will often see Frankie followed by their Chihuahua named Themis (for the Greek goddess of justice), who is the unofficial Measure 11 pod mascot, or you'll just see Themis wandering around on her own because sitting at a desk all day is boring for a doggo.
